Poster Club are a collection of artists based in Glasgow who regularly meet up to try their hand at collaborative poster making. They were awarded the Central Station member fund in March this year. I caught up with Ciara and Nicolas for a quick chat about their group and to find out what they had spent the CenSta fund money on. How did Poster Club come about? Ciara: In Glasgow, this current group has been going since January. I actually started it when I used to teach in Carlisle and I felt the students weren't making use of their print-making facilities. I started a Poster Club down there once a week on a Monday morning to get students doing some printing. Then I left that job just to focus on my own stuff and I thought it might be good to do it as a more professional club. I asked people who were members of the print studio whose work I liked if they'd be interested and everyone was really enthusiastic and we decided to start doing it once a week and see how it went. Then we applied to Central Station for some money which has been helpful because we're all artists and nobody has any extra money! What did the Central Station money go towards? Ciara: It was for start-up costs basically, we've ended up buying screens, emulsion base, paper, the basic things so we have a supply that we can use on a weekly basis. What sort of backgrounds do the members of Poster Club come from? Ciara: We're all fine artists, there's a range - a sculptor, a painter, printmaker, photographer - everything really. And what sort of work are you making? Unfortunately I didn’t get a look in on the cake but I did come away with a beautiful ‘yes’ poster which now has pride of place on Central Station’s studio wall.
Nicolas: We can just do it which is really great, it's always a problem in the creative process when you have to think 'oh no I can't use this because it's too expensive'.
Nicolas: There are 7 of us - from every discipline. Everyone is somehow interested in graphic visuals but we are from very different backgrounds.
Ciara: They’re not posters that are advertising anything, they’re more like artworks.
Nicolas: Every time we make ten…
Ciara: …and we also decided that we collaborate on posters.
Nicolas: It’s a lot about experimentation as well because some people are used to screen printing and some people are not.
Ciara: I like that about it - that at a professional level it’s a skill sharing thing as well.
Nicolas: the idea is to share things and try things and to have a good time and have cake!
