Dundee Popup / WASPS studio tour

On arriving at the WASPS studio we were greeted by a group of people bustling around outside, all wearing their Central Stations badges & waiting to be let into the studio building. The WASPS studio is a large box building which looks like it was once a factory of some sorts, but now houses around 60 working artists.

Once inside we were led up what seemed like several fleights of stairs, all the walls covered in paper flowers & passing a window sill covered in 'The Skinny' & various artsy leaflets it's obvious that there are arists near by.

We all gathered in the corridor & having split into 3 groups we all went our seperate ways to visit different artists studios. My group's tour guide's for the hour were the very helpful jewlers Genna Delaney & Nicola Morrison. Nicola was the first to show us round her working space, which was organised & tidy, full of jewlers tools & machinery. It was really interesting to see what each artist had done with their own space. The girls told us that when you recieve your space in The Wasps Studio, it's just an empty shell which you can make your own. Nicola had a glass cabinet holding some of work & had said that she preferred being able to work in space like this because it wasn't ideal to be using blow torches at home!

The White Space Gallery was our next quick stop, where we saw the open white walled space which was used to hold exhitibions.

Genna Delaney's studio had once been the same size as Nicola's however having had a low ceiling installed, her studio now has a homely, cosy feeling. It was well lit & she had a nice view across the city of Dundee. Genna shares her studio with another jewler & so to the left corner of the room sat a work bench fitted with two vices & various jewler tools lying around. Artists can choose to share their space if they want to, we were told, some also rent out their space if they happen to be working away for a few months, or are having a child etc.

Our final stop was Lindsey Gardiner's studio, which was the cosiest of the all. With carpet laid on the floor, a sofa, microwave & a spot for the dogs, it defintley looked like a home away from home! Lindsey spoke a bit about being an illustrator despite graduating from textile design in dundee.

The WASPS studios are a great way for people to move out from working by themselves, which can be quite isolating, & allow them the chance to make their own home out of a white walled space. Central Station's tour of the WASP studio was a fantastic oppurtunity to see how artists work within the space, & the oppurtunities is gave for people to work amongst one another.

Great tour, thank you to the WASPS artists who showed us around!
