How do YOU get creative?

CenSta member and journalist Michael Burns is writing a feature for DIGITAL ARTS Magazine and has asked our community how do we get creative? What tips could you share for all types of artists and designers on unlocking creative blocks or seeing problems from a different perspective?

He wants original, insider info. In return you get name checked and featured in the article with a chance to showcase some of your work in the magazine. Michael is particularly interested in design / illustration / motion graphics.

We are trying to gather 10 substantial ones - up to 100 words each. Deadline is Friday morning (22nd Jan).

I'm going to kick off the first posting below - please feel free to add to this and we'll get Michael to select the final contributors.

  • Hi everyone,

Many thanks for all your contributions and cheers Damien for posting in the first place! I managed to cherry pick some fine ideas and where possible I've namechecked those responsible. It was a very short feature so I couldn't mention you all, I'm afraid. I was also polling a number of designers I know around the world - similar techniques came up several times, so I tried to amalgamate as much as possible.

If you're interested in contributing to future features, where you'll have more chance to be represented and show off your work, please get in touch, or have a chat with me tomorrow if you're going to the Dundee Pop-up/meet up thing. It'll be great to hear from you either way.

    Thanks again!

  • Colin, this is really interesting.  It reminds me of my early morning meditation experiences, very eloquently written you have really inspired me.  You are so good to give yourself proper quality time – good for you!

So easy to get caught up in stuff, relationships, deadlines and all the ripples of these experiences that congest our minds, I find it’s often when we are attached to outcomes    our energy doesn’t flow, we don’t feel free – and thus the blocks.

When I meditate,  I step back from my thoughts and let the quiet spaces open out inside I touch my core, peace pours into my mind.  With each thought and feeling that is considered and that is shared actively from this pure unencumbered experience generates benevolent feelings that naturally bring out the best in me.

If I’ve not been too ruffled by my emotional blockers I’m usually back in business after some meditation, self esteem intact creativity a natural part of my nature, open to learning with a can do attitude so that when I sit ideas can flow.  If by then it’s not flowing I’ll go for a walk get distracted for a while and then revisit it – usually works for me – just need to take a note pad or make the thoughts and feelings powerful so the impression stays in my mind.
