As part of The Hidden Lane community, we have always been keen to encourage and participate in projects between creatives, and to engage with other locally based businesses for the benefit of the Finnieston and Glasgow area as a whole. Last year saw us begin to take larger steps towards this when we took on and renovated one of the larger spaces in The Hidden Lane. Having a space which is conducive to sharing and to encouraging creative development has been a large undertaking for our small business but we now have a wonderful space that is bright, flexible and feels like our home. The space itself is a tad rickety round the edges but that comes as part of the Lane habitat and adds a 'work in progress' feel to our environment, which keeps us thinking of the future and of plans to evolve. The space had been sitting empty since we moved to the Lane over a year ago and we often thought about how we could manage to move into the lofty, attic space, it was only when others began to show an interest in our plan did we begin to take our own idea seriously and put the wheels in motion to make our little dream become a reality. Our first job was to convince our wonderful Lane Landlord to lease us the space in the first place. Having settled in nicely throughout our first year there, he was more than happy to allow us to stay and to provide assistance if he could. One of the resident lane architects, Lee Ivett, helped us draw up some plans to make the space work hard for us and to fit what was a limited construction budget. Using the official 'lane plumber' to reshuffle our central heating around enabled us to create space for the partial height walls that would divide up the space. The 'lane joiner' assisted us in erecting timber frames and promises us he'll come back soon to finish our skirting boards. An old french style sofa was reclaimed from another office in the Lane, thanks to Duncan Macdonald who noted it heading for the skip and thought it could be put to use in our new studio. Another contact, this time from the Buddhist Centre round the corner, offered to help us plaster our new walls to enable him to practise his skills, and thanks to Oche Maguire they are wonderfully smooth and more importantly still standing! A local electrician offered to install new, non-headache inducing, lighting in exchange for a small website profile, and with a name like Circuit & C we couldn't resist. Now other companies in the Lane are after our lights and asking after our electrician, thats how it should work. The model makers Finch & Fouracre were roped in to help us with the final shelf building and their toolbox helped us out throughout the whole build. We have a space where our team can work together in a space that inspires us. We have a lounge area where the beautiful sofas live, we can have a chat with clients, catch up with each other or just step away from the desk for a while. We have a small kitchen area for all important tea making, we are warm and the light is good. We share our space with two other companies, all open plan, all getting along, all working away on what we each do best and helping each other out when we can. When we're really busy we invite freelancers to come in and work alongside us and when we're a little quieter we'd like to invite graduates to visit, to see what goes on and hear about our experiences of setting up our business and working within the creative industry. Everyone has their own story to tell and different experiences to pass on, we hope everything we have learned so far can help others. We had a small office party to celebrate when phase one of our office was complete. We got to meet some new Lane businesses, catch up with existing ones and celebrate our own little dream becoming a reality. Drinks were bought in from the infamous 'Cage' off-license and pizza came from just across the road. We really do have everything we need right on our doorsteps. And it's the same with the creative industry in Scotland, there is so much going on right in front of us we just have to take the time to look for it, to make the connections, to share our experiences and to help each other out when we can.
