Group Profile

The Magic Lantern celebrates short film. We view the form as a unique platform for innovative, experimental and rule-breaking filmmaking. We curate thematic programmes of short films that weave together archive treasures, artists' film & video and narrative film. We like how the juxtaposition of these films collectively is sometimes greater than the sum of its parts. By placing programmes in a range of contexts: from street cinemas, club visuals in specifically designed sets, music festivals, and comedy venues to film festivals, galleries, and, of course, cinemas we seek to challenge your perceptions of a form which is too often marginalised.

The Magic Lantern was born from a passion for film and creative programming and launched at CCA, Glasgow in 2006. Since then it's gone on to screen at venues across Scotland from Dumfries to the outer Hebrides, working with a range of like-minded partner organisations and presenting thematic programmes and retrospectives. In 2008 The Magic Lantern launched the Glasgow Short Film Festival, in conjunction with The Glasgow Film Festival. Each February we produce 3 days of international programmes alongside retrospectives, guest programmes, industry events and panel discussions all hosted by our partners, the CCA.

We are committed to celebrating inspiration and innovation in new cinema, and so for the first time in 2010 GSFF will hold a competition for Best International Short Film. Drawn from our international programme, selected by The Magic Lantern team and judged by a jury of film insiders, filmmakers will compete for a cash prize.

Alongside this core programme we will present a great range of screenings, events and parties in collaboration with our partners.

Full programme will be announced 20 January 2010.

    • Film Song Edinburgh 1.2

    • Film Song Edinburgh (Preview Version) A film By Julien Pearly A song by Matt Norris and the Moon FSE 1.1 - First Light of Day vimeo.com/12826650 FSE 1.2 - Before There is Frost vimeo.com/12828111 FSE 1.3 - Treacherous Lands vimeo.com/12829235 FSE 1.4 - This Year vimeo.com/12830204 Edinburgh, 4th of June Edinburgh is an amazing place for music. It happens everywhere if you look attentively. And if you want to hear completely unknown local bands, I recommend you to walk along the meadows path where you are sure to get into sight of some great fellow musicians having a ball with their instruments. So that’s how I met Matt, Dave and Tom, while busking with their band The Last of Barrett's Privateers I just walked down the path with my camera then asked if I could film them. I left my card to Dave and the next day he contacted me by email regarding the videos. He also explained that they were parts of two bands with basically almost the same line up. We arranged for a filming session with the other band Matt Norris and the Moon on the following Friday evening before their gig at Maggies Chamber. Both bands have their own song qualities and I will upload the videos of the other band quite soon. On the day of filming, I listen to the tunes on their myspace (myspace.com/mattnorrismusic ) to have an idea of what we can do. “Before there is frost” is the first track to catch my attention. A beautiful song with touching lyrics, having been through a recent break up myself, the words “I could win you back” ring in my head all day and will do so for the rest of the week. From this moment I can’t think of anything else than this song and think a way to film it nicely. I remember Dave telling me his flat is next to the venue so I ask him if it would be ok to use it for our session. Situated on market fish close, Cowgate would be great scenery for the song. So the first plan is to start with singer Matt alone going downstairs from the flat and walking towards Dave and Tom who will join him at the end of an alley. I don’t have much idea for the rest of the songs but I don’t want to think too much and leave things open. I just keep in mind a little idea storywise to link up the songs: Matt alone first in shot with Dave and Tom waiting and joining him at some point in the song. So on my way to the meeting point with Jake and Lucia to talk more about what we gonna do, I pass through the meadows path again and guess who I bump into? Matt and some folks playing music, of course! Adam who used to play with Black Cat and Alan from AARON WRIGHT & the APRILS band are with them practicing a song (this year). Testing a kind of folky flute called xaphoon he just grasped 4 days before, this amazing musician can already play it like after years of practice. I take the camera out for a 1st filming session (FSE1.4). After a while they leave to get ready for the evening. On my way to the Cowgate I capture a few moments of music and skateboarding before doing some test down the fish market close to check for the timing of the song. The road is too long added with the stairs we will need to find a different solution. Everybody meets then time to gather at Dave flat to start filming. In the building you can’t imagine my surprise when we take a tiny lift to go upstairs. A lift! In Edinburgh!? Never saw that before. So I figure out that for the first true Film Song Edinburgh I can’t miss the big clin d’oeil to the people of la blogotheque and Vincent Moon who did it with bands like Grizzly Bear and Arcade Fire. They inspired me the idea of these videos and keep being an inspiration for music filmmakers around the globe (that’s why I put it first too). We get ready and find there is enough room for the band plus me inside, but as we want to record using Jake equipment we decide that Lucia will keep the door open to allow him to record from outside. Off we go, matt calling for the lift with tom and Dave inside already. We get the take in one go (FSE 1.1). People arrive just at the end of the song from the stairs, some laughing when realizing that a band inside this tiny place is having a wee jam and is also the reason why they can’t use it. We will hear later that someone complained about the noise and called the cops. Nevermind! We go outside for the song I really wanted to film since the morning (1.3) and arriving downstairs I notice the French little restaurant in the corner of the street. Why not starting the song from there and have with the frenchy sign introducing the shot. The band will be waiting at the top of the gate with royal mile on their back. We do a first try but then my camera stops half way through. Damn! We go for a second take knowing the band needs to go quite soon so it will be our last try. All goes well until a car just appears from nowhere in this little street, I’m in the middle of the road holding the camera, both matt and me don’t know if we should go on. Suddenly Lucia pulls me on the side and does a sign to the car to wait for the end of the shooting. Amazingly when she does so I keep framing matt guitar then go back to a quieter frame of mind as I see him smiling when he misses a string. For the rest of the song I have doubts if this is the right take and even bump into the cobbles of the pavement a few times. But the atmosphere up at the gate with people stopping by to watch us and this hairy man at the end all smiling and thanking us make the video a jewel of little incidents, so I’m sure now we couldn’t have done better. Time for the concert and for the band to go, I thank Lucia for her help as she needs to go to work and go with Jake to attend the Tale of two Maggies night. What a night! Organized for a charity cause, Matt and his band are the first to play among a long list of others. Treacherous Land (1.3) is a song that goes right through the core of my heart. When I keep hearing the repeated phrase “can’t you see I have tried with all my mind, with all my heart because I might be right?” I can’t stop thinking of the past but also to the reason why I’m filming all these bands. It’s more than for passion and work that I’m doing this, it’s a need, for the present, for the future. Julien Pearly

    • FILM SONG SCOTLAND 1.1

    • A film By julien PearlyA song By Aaron DenningtonColdingham Scotland May 29th 2010 I met Aaron at last year Edinburgh Fringe Festival while I was filming for a music video. He was busking n a tunnel of the old town with his brother and his band called Burning Clouds at that time. Now the Dark Jokes with a even better sound than before, he does however his own solo stuff. This is one of his solo compositions. With strong lyrics and powerful finger picking style he keeps impressing me every time I hear his live performance. He is capable of making you feel right away the raw emotions of a song which is, I believe, the most important thing for a singer/songwriter. But I have to say where he impresses me the most is in his drinking capacity. I have to tell you how I landed in his father caravan on this beautiful Saturday:The previous night we planned we would meet up at the black Bo, a pub in Edinburgh old town. Accompanied with his guitar (he was busking on Princes street just before) we had a long conversation, interesting and deep as always with him, and a few drinks then we went to join his father Arne and some of his friends, Boyce and Derek, in an another pub, the Tass. There, things went pretty serious with live music and more drinking. Things went even more serious when the pub closed just after the usual 10 min bell ringing the last order. A thing that keeps pissing me off as I’m quite a slow drinker, the barmaid ended up taking my pint away and I, myself, ended up swearing at her. Not a nice thing to do I agree but it gives you quite a pleasing feeling on the moment. So after a trip by taxi with all the team, less Derek who went to his bed, we get to Arne house and played music until early morning. Everybody did a few tunes of his own composition and I even tried my latest one. Boyce did too impress me with his catchy songs. I feel always blessed when surrounded by such talented musicians. Before going to bed Arne prevents me they d wake up early to go out from the city to his caravan near North Berwick, in Coldingham. I’m not really sure to go but we’ll see, I fall asleep. The morning arrives and like planned they prepare their trip. Still unsure to go I feel terrible but I let the moment takes my doubts away and follow my instinct. This day out from the city arrives at a perfect time in my troubled life. One thing though I need to grasp before leaving town, my dear camera. After an hour trip with Boyce and Derek we arrive at destination. I take the time to wake up from the sleep I did in the car and look around to discover the place with my eyes. I have to admit I’m surprised. They said it was a small caravan but I find it rather quite big. The whole camping site as well is impressive and I feel very glad I have come with them all this way. The afternoon then goes in the fun with a mix of playing football and music. In this song Aaron is accompanied by Arne on the mandolin and Derek on 2nd guitar. Boyce is away in his car, sleeping.  In the next song Aaron does a nice cover of a Jimmy Reed song I find so good I put it in this Film Song Scotland Episode while his father is trying to set up a brand new Tv, which seems not work so well for him.

    • Film Song Vienna "The Syrian Waltz"

    • "Filmcasino, Vienna May 18th. The 2nd Screening was over; people were ready to leave or I should say, to start drinking. I go out at the front door and realize the cinema lighting and how beautiful the whole place is. A state of emergency overwhelms me. Before the screening, we agreed with the 2 actors, Bastiana aka Anna and Silviu that we would shoot the dance tomorrow morning in a place still to be decided (my 1st choice was on the Danube island), but my instincts tell me otherwise. We can and have to do it here, with all our people around having fun! So I take them apart from the crowd (and the fun) to get serious and shout: lets do it now, it’s now or never for me! And they are up for it, great! I love these moments. Luckily enough anna has her dress with her and silviu borrows Gabriel shirt, I grab my camera and the jobby (akos you love this jobby I know) and off we go at the front door, all dressed and ready to shoot. I explain again briefly what’s gonna happen and put 2 persons behind the doors to block people to go through it while we are filming. The plan is simple: Martha, all smartly dressed too, will take her place on the front side to give the tempo. They will go out through the door and stay still looking like a couple trying to reconnect with eachother then finding it through dance and music. I will shoot tight close-ups to introduce the couple before walking backwards to introduce the whole scene and get everything in the shot. We are all setup and I press record while the couple gets ready inside the cinema, then it starts! After a 1st try that fails after a few seconds, we go for the second take and then the magic happens. No music, just Martha clapping and our two actors starts moving rhythmically to it but also like if some music was coming out of nowhere that only them could hear. And I’m, like a deaf man blinded by this beautiful moment, imagining this music while doing my best to focus on the framing. They do perfectly the transition between the beginning where they show difficulty to dance and when they break through to reach the musical place, where there is no disturbance from the surrounding, just the two of them alone, disconnected to the real world and connected together with the world of music. I’m walking away from the scene, akos leading me and stopping the cars that come by. Then I give a glimpse of where these two persons actually are dancing: outside a cinema! What a wonderful show the next night when they are on a big screen in a different cinema. What an amazing thing to see the film with the band, martha, Vladimir and Brigitte, filling the air with music, that same music only these two persons could hear. And here, what a great miracle we are witnessing! We enter into a world (the film) where the story takes place and come out to enter another (the screening) where the music is played." synopsis: A couple, one song, one dance, one take. 2 worlds joining together through the combination of live music and film. music performed live at the cinema breitenseer lichtspiele for a quickie made during the kinodynamique, vienna may 2010. a little experiment inspired by a music live project using visuals done years ago and the work of la blogotheque and vincent moon.

  • Central Station members are invited to submit short films connected to art & music to be considered for screening during the Glasgow Short Film Festival 2010. Ideally your film will be less than 15 minutes long.

Go to http://dropbox.yousendit.com/CenStaPROJECTS to submit your entry. Maximum file size is 2GB.

In February, GSFF curators Rosie Crerar and Matt Lloyd will select up to 5 of their favourite films for inclusion in Central Station's festival programme alongside Art/Roc/Doc, shot earlier this year by Central Station and members.

All the successful film-makers will be offered tickets and invitations to participate in GSFF over the weekend of Friday 19th - Sunday 21st February. You may also be given the opportunity to talk about your work during a special Art & Music screening event we're holding on the same day.

A little background information: in October 2009, Central Station filmed a short film with a little help from our friends. Art/Roc/Doc is now being edited and wil premier at the Glasgow Short Film Festival 2010. Click here to see the trailer.
