A brainstorm for an uninvited infringement on the fringe festival.  Per usual, our conversations have led us to the ridiculous, and the absurd.

      1. )   Collect empty aluminum beer and soda cans.  Choose several colors of spray paint and paint the cans with these colors.  Leave the top and bottom shiny aluminum surface to stay unpainted by covering them with tape. Make several groups of these cans and leave them on the street as unique trash.  (on corners, near dumpsters or portable toilets, etc)

2.)   Create a lifesize "Venus of Willendorf" (aka Woman of Willendorf) out of cheap sculptural materials such as paper maiche, and wire armature.  The craft can be crude, exaggerated, or overly simplified.  The sculpture should lay on a beach towel in a grassy area or park, as if she is sunbathing.  Additionally, around the towel or blanket there could be a giant empty diet coke, and a radio playing static (white noise).  This project could also be interpreted as a performance piece whereby the sculpture is a costume to be worn.  It would be effective in an area where other people are sitting and laying in the grass.

Regarding production, we would like the specifics of these concepts, such as materials, placement, to be open to interpretation as a form of open collaboration.

  • My degree show, Gray's 2010 My degree show, Gray's 2010

    • From: ChristineSpence
    • Description:

Gray's School of Art Degree show 2010. Here, looking at family ties, inspired by my collection of black and white photos I learned the craft of knitting with an Aberdeen knitting group. Together, we created 60 knitted wombs which talk of that age of tradition of knitting in anticipation of a new born baby, the passing of genes from one generation to the next and the past informing the future. Along side this were collages, which were the outcome of my coming to an understanding of motherhood and giving birth; a though that both excites and terrifies me.

A qoute that I used in the cataloge helps explain my facination with the past and in particular, old black and white photographs. What do they teach us?

"It has showen me that everything is illuminated in the light of the past. It is alwasy along the side of us on the inside looking out, like you say, inside out. In this way I will always be along the side of your life, and you mine. We have something to exist for and of course, in case anyone comes searching." Everything is Illuminated.
